So, we had two pirates again this year! They loved the costumes that Grammie made last year so much that we couldn't get them to take them off for weeks this year. Halloween was a warm night and clear, so there were lots of kids out in the neighborhood. The boys tricked and treated until they were absolutely worn out! By the end they were asking me to carry their candy jack-o-lanterns! We're still eating candy all the time, but hopefully the Sweets Fairy will come soon! ;-) The picture below was taken by the folks who own our local coffee shop... they were handing out whole Hersheys' bars and hot chocolate! --D
Sam (his fourth time out of bed since getting tucked in): "My head hurts."
Jen: "No it doesn't."
Sam: "Yes, it does. I need a drink of water."
Dave: "Well, you know where to get a drink."
Sam: "No I don't."
Jen: "Oh yes you do."
Dave: "You know, just about anywhere in this house except the toilet. Now go to bed."
Yesterday was my last day at work. I didn't actually quit. I'm still an employee of CH2M HILL. But I'm not working. For a while. For the summer. For who knows how long. And it feels really, really good.
So, how, exactly, did I spend my first day as a SAHM? I WENT ON A FIELD TRIP TO THE ZOO WITH 75 KINDERGARTENERS.
To say that I have a new-found respect for kindergarten teachers EVERYWHERE is an understatement.
I won't go into the details about how the the day went -- and it went fine, by the way -- but I am tired in a way I haven't been tired in a long time. Plum-tuckered. WORN OUT. I was responsible for just three kids -- THREE -- but it felt like thirty-three. Sam, Tamrat, and Ramon. Sweet, beautiful boys. But, my Lord, FULL OF ENERGY.
So now on my list of saints, in addition to single parents, are kindergarten teachers. And I'm so happy that Sam has the wonderful Ms. O'Neill.
Anyway, now that I've taken a break from my job, I should have more time to post here, right? Right! That's what I'm going to do. Staying in touch with the folks back home is really important to me -- to all of us -- but you wouldn't know it by how often we post. So I promise that that is going to change. Starting now.
Cheers to 2007! Jen and I sayed up and watched the ball drop last night and had a bit (too much) of the bubbly. We're looking forward to an exciting January. Jen is starting her photography class this week; I'm going snowboarding this week (only my second time -- so, it should be painful!!); Sam is back in school and Charlie... well, we're just trying to keep Charlie out of trouble, which you know is a full time job. I've gotta run... Sam wants to play Uno! Here's a few quick photos from the XMAS trip! Cheers! --Dave
We can't count the number of times that Sam has come downstairs just minutes after being tucked into bed and said, "Mama, Daddy, I had a bad dream."
"Hmmmm. How can you have a bad dream if you haven't fallen asleep yet?"
This question would lead to hemming and hawing on his part and a desperate attempt to come up with a good excuse to stay up longer. We, of course, never took the bait and sent him marching back upstairs to bed.
Tonight, Sam tried a different approach.
"Mama, Daddy, I had a bad think."
We had a break in the rain yesterday, so we headed out to the Woodland Park Zoo.
Sam took a lot of pictures, including this first shot of a peacock.
The orangutans were great. Check out this male orangutan with the large cheek pads. And, since it wasn't feeding time, Sam seemed not to have any problems with them (unlike the last visit to the Louisville Zoo).
We also saw the giraffes, hippos, elephants, monkeys, gorillas, orangutans, wolfs, penguins, eagle, hawks, falcons, and the tapirs.
There were a bunch of creatures we didn't get to see, but we bought an annual membership, so we should be able to check them all out before too long.
I think the boys' favorite part was using the map to locate the animals.
There's also an interesting story about why we ended up at the zoo in the first place: Charlie has been asking to go to the zoo just about every day for a month. We have no idea why he started asking, but, man was he PERSISTENT! Anyway, they both really seemed to have a ball, and I'm sure we'll have many more zoomania posts in the future.
We hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving this week! We'll be missing you all on turkey day.
Cheers!

Tonight I was trying to explain to Sam what time zones are, and it went something like this,
Sam: "I don't understand what you are saying!"
Dad: "I know, it's complicated."
S: "It's not complicated; it's just hard!"
D: "That's what complicated means... complicated means it's too hard."
S: "Dad you're wrong!"
D: "Wha?"
Sam, "I know you're wrong! I pretty much know everything now. I'm almost 6!"
Well, it was a rainy and lazy indoor day around here. Charlie seems to be coming down with a cold too, so that kept us pretty low key. Lots of chocolate milk and board games and Legos. I snapped the above picture while the boys were in the middle of a Curious George marathon.
We've officially hit the rainy season here. It should continue to rain a bunch until the end of the year. But we have the holidays and our trip to Kentucky to look forward too. And after that we'll be getting some snow up in Snoqualmie Pass, so knowing that should make the rainy days more tolerable.

Here's an interview with Sam about his latest obsession...
Dad: So, Sam when did you first learn about fuse beads?
Sam: I just know of them.
D: Where did you first play with them?
S: CDSA. (Community Day School Association)
Mom: What were your first designs?
S: My heart and a star.
D: Why do you like playing fuse beads?
S: I just do.
D: What kind of design are you working on now?
S: I'm making a ghost head for David (his best friend at the Maple School).
D: How long have you been working on fuse beads today?
S: A long time... a few minutes. (About 3 and 1/2 hours)
D: Do you think you'll ever get tired of fuse beads?
S: No.
.... to be continued (and continued...)...
